An ideal city for a romantic getaway, Barcelona, with its warm days and even warmer nights, a culture of joy, food and music, makes for a wonderful party where romance is always on the guest-list. A city of multiple cultures, ambience and stupendous cuisine, romantic foodies must go to the Mercado de la Boqueria first mentioned in 1217, and a pleasure for all the senses.
A stroll around Barcelona’s top landmark, La Sagrada Familia, a UNESCO world heritage site; Gaudi’s unfinished masterpiece is one of the world’s must-see churches, but even better is to go Gaudi spotting, you’ll find lots of examples of Gaudi’s work often in the most unexpected places. Las Ramblas is the city’s best-known thoroughfare, and the main artery through the Old Town, from the Plaza de Catalunya and leading to the port, you’ll pass the most intact Gothic quarter (Barri Gotic) in Europe leading from Eixample (Should that not be leading by Eixample, just kidding!) to the coast. Constantly buzzing, it’s lined with attractive shops, street artists and flower stalls…. Perfect for a romantic stroll around this fascinating city. Of course Valentine’s Day is a great time to visit Barcelona with your dearest, and really get caught up in the romantic atmosphere, but the Catalan nights keep romance warm throughout the year, so remember “Romance is not just for Valentine’s Day!” And Barcelona is a fantastic destination year round.
You may not think of it either, but Barcelona is a great stopover after a skiing trip to Andorra, with plenty of low-cost flying in the winter, regular transfer coaches going up to the main Andorran resorts.
