Interlaken’s eternal charm
Interlaken is one of the oldest and most popular tourist resorts in Switzerland. It is located in the area called Bödeli, between two crystal lakes, the Lake Thun to the west and Lake Brienz to the east. The lakes and the Aare River that connects them, make Interlake a famous destination not only for ski enthusiasts but also backpackers from around the world, who enjoy canyoning, paragliding, skydiving, hang gliding, and skiing, among others, throughout the year. Besides the beautiful lakes that have become the refuge of royalty, musicians, and writers from the corners of the Earth, tourists can enjoy equally picturesque views of unparalleled beauty at the St. Beautus Caves and Trümmelbach Falls.
The legend says that St. Beautus, who chose this lake for his hermitage, fought with a fire-breathing dragon residing in the same cave, and after an epic battle, he sent the dragon to Lake Thun. Now, the St. Beautus Cave has a beautiful interior full of stalagmites, stalactites, and underground waterfalls. Another waterfall that amazes is the Trümmelbach Falls, the world’s sole glacier waterfalls. This impressive natural attraction located near the Lauterbrunnen Valley emerges from a mountain face and showcases nature’s stupendous power. This well-illuminated waterfall is accessible by a tunnel lift and drains the water of Mt. Jungfraujoch. The Rugen Forest is a great vantage point, where you can take a toboggan run under the crisp sun. Finally, another superb spot for mountain hikes is the Harder Klum Mountain, offering fantastic views of peaks, such as Monch, Jungfrau, and Eiger.
Interlaken is a base from which you can explore the surrounding areas by bus, and, mainly, by train, which has become an iconic symbol in the area. The quaint Jungfraujoch and Jungfrau railway stations are some of the most popular attractions, at 11,320ft and 13, 642ft respectively. Those that want a getaway from the crowds find the ride to Schynige Platte perfect. The amazing views of the more than 500 varieties of flowers (if you are lucky enough, even Edelweiss) in blossom and the magnificent Swiss Alps are enough to relax the mind. For nature lovers, the cog-wheel train trip from Wilderswil, can take you to the Alpine Garden. There, you have the opportunity to see more than 600 plant species from the Alps. However, the ride itself is a surely rewarding experience, providing scenic views of the Alpine beauty. Mt.Titlis, is the world’s first revolving cable car that can take you all the way to the summit of Klein Titlis, at 3,028 meters. You can find it in the Urner Alps of Switzerland, between the Berne and Engelberg cantons, and the views are panoramic and definitely breath-taking. Titlis is the largest snowboard and ski resort in Central Switzerland, with 5 cross-country ski runs, more than 80 km of slopes, snow shoe trails, a 3 ½ km long sledge ride, and winter hiking trails. The summer offers an incredible array of activities, such as Trotti biking, mountain flower trails, mountain biking, and the Titlis Scooter. A must-see attraction is the new glacier suspension bridge, the glacier park, and the icy glacier cave, and you mustn’t miss the chair lift ICE Flyer over the numerous theme walks and crevasses. Now, if you like paranormal-based theme parks, then the Mystery Park is where you want to be.
At restaurants like the Benacus, you can expect to be served great traditional Swiss food, such as Cottage Cheese with Fig Salad, Pork with Truffled Potatoes, Chocolate Fondue, and Salmon Tartar. The bistro atmosphere, alongside the delicious food served and the excellent collection of Swiss wines, make Benacus a popular gastronomic pole of attraction.
Your palate will also be pleased at the Goldener Anker, the pub-style restaurant, where you can have Pecorino and Pine Nut Stuffed Ravioli, Veal with Noodles, and mouth-melting Pork Cutlet, among others.
However, Interlaken can please other culinary needs, as well. The Little Thai restaurant spices things up a bit with generous portions of Green Curry with Rice, and Tom Yum Prawn Soup.
Finally, you can satiate your Indian food cravings at the Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant and caress your taste buds with Chicken Tikka Masala, Vegetable Buffet, and Dal Makhani.
