Nendaz – The area
Nendaz lies on a beautiful terrace near Sion (Sitten), the capital of Valais, just above the Rhone Valley. The terrace commands an enchanting view of the Vaud, Valais, and Bernese Alps as it stretches up to 1400m in altitude. Nendaz consists of hamlets including Baar, Beuson, Bieudron, Brignon, Base-Nendaz, Aproz, and Haute-Nendaz. Close to Nendaz are a number of unique natural attractions, such as the impressive underground Grottensee Lake, between Sierre and Sion, near St-Leonard, that has boat trips running from March to November. Winter trails lead to breath-taking views of Europe’s oldest (over 800 years old) and most extravagant larches that grow on the Balavaud Alp. Finally, the small valley of Tortin, situated at the summit of the so-called “Japanese Garden”; a beautiful glacier moraine that looks much like a tended garden, is another source of delight to nature lovers, mesmerising them with its superb views. Other natural attractions include the Lac du Grande Desert with incredible variety of flora and enthralling views.
Nendaz – The Village
The delightful old village of Nendaz, with its traditional grain stores, barns, and timber houses, has seen its centre growing into a modern holiday resort. The fortified hill castle of Valere, is another attraction that dominates the historic townscape of Sitten, also offering fantastic views. The same applies to the Grande Dixence Reservoir, the world’s highest reservoir located in the Hérémence Valley, at 285 metres. In addition, Nendaz has more than 412 pistes as part of the world-famous 4 Valleys ski area that it share with its neighbours Verbier and Veysonnaz. There is also a 12km cross-country ski track and the 98km Suomen trails that provide a nice opportunity for a gentle walk along the Nendaz irrigation channels. Expect to be bewildered by the quaint, little town of Saillon-les-Bains with Roman and Neolithic remains offering plenty of photo opportunities, including thermal baths. Last, but definitely not least, the Bisses du Milieu, De Salins, and du Vieux for their magnificent views as they plunge into spruce forests, and water the orchards, pastures, and strawberry & raspberry fields on their way.
