Saas Fee is the most renowned of the four glacier villages in the Saas Valley in Switzerland, located 1,800m above sea level. Also known as The Pearl of the Alps, Saas Fee boasts 13 4,000m peaks and comprises the ideal starting point for the Mattmark natural dam, which is the main attraction. With 350km of hiking and thematic trails, and 22 railways leading to the 150km of pistes that satisfy all ski levels, Saas Fee will surely steal your heart. Alpine Metro or Metro Alpin, will take you to the summit of Mittelallalin and the revolving restaurant that takes the lead as the world’s highest revolving dining facility. Some of the natural attractions include the Alpine Gorge, a spectacular gorge that you can only cross with the help of a mountain guide, offering amazing views of the surrounding mountainscape.
The charming village lies in the midst of impressive glaciers and majestic mountains, such as the 4.7km Fee Glacier in the Pennine Alps, the rocky outcrop of Längfluh that divides the Fee Glacier and the Mischabelhörner, the 3rd highest mountain in the Alps. Other mountains equally perfectly suited for all sorts of winter sports are the Alphubel, the Lenzspitze, and the Lenzspitze, among so many others. Finally, the Hanning area (the Hanning mountain is also referred as The Pedestrians’ Mountain) is ideal for tobogganing, snowshoeing, walking, and paragliding. The least you can expect from visiting Saas Fee is stupendous views, amazing trails, and challenging runs that please every taste and desire for skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, ice skating, ice climbing, and hiking.
Worth mentioning are the various courses available at the Adventure Park (a suspension rope park) that will provide you with an extra opportunity for outdoor activities and a breath-taking glacier backdrop. As for the Saaser Museum, it is a great place to visit if you are interested in learning about the way mountain people used to live back in the old days. Finally, besides the several excellent accommodation facilities that suit every need and budget, the Bielen sports and leisure centre will provide you with various comforts, ranging from sauna and steam bath to table tennis, swimming, and billiard.
For a small village, Saas Fee has an impressive number of restaurants treating your taste buds with a wide array of cuisine: from fine gourmet European cuisine to hearty Valais and Swiss specialities. With more than 100 dining facilities to please your palate, you can enjoy a fabulous Alpine atmosphere and delicious food at the Vernissage Berghaus Plattjen while gazing at the magnificent glacier views. According to locals, the best food on the hill is served at the Spielboden hut, situated just opposite the Spielboden lift. Some of their specialities include Shrimp Salad, Linguine with Truffles, Beef Tartar, Lobster Soup, Cheese & Crouton Salad, and Chocolate Mousse. For something a bit different, the Britannia-Hütte restaurant is a climbing refuge accessible after a 15-minute trek from the Felskinn pistes and offers heart-stopping views. The food may be simple but is definitely delicious. You can please your senses with hearty soups, Rösti, and sausages and choose to eat outside, where on a sunny day the views are fantastic, or inside in the dining hall. Lastly, for a light bite to eat, Saas Fee has plenty of pizzerias, bars, and cafes.
